Community Development Associate/Senior Planner Recruitment

Associate Planner  $6475/month - $7871/month 

Senior Planner  $7445/month - $9050/month 

Both classification include comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision with a city contribution, and participation in CalPERS retirement.

The City of Capitola Community Development Department is recruiting to fill a single vacant full-time planner position.   The position will be filled at either the Associate Planner or Senior Planner classification depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected applicant.

Associate Planner

The Associate Planner carries out activities related to review and processing of development applications, including the preparation of written and oral reports and recommendations to the Zoning Administrator, Architectural and Site Review Committee, Planning Commission and City Council, site design evaluation, interaction with applicants and the public, and coordination of review by other departments and agencies.

Under direction, the Associate Planner also researches, prepares and carries out comprehensive, professional activities related to special studies and area plans, zoning ordinance/map amendments, elements of the General Plan and Local Coastal Program, environmental resource protection, trip reduction program, CEQA/NEPA environmental review, demographic and economic data gathering, research and analysis, historical preservation, and other related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A)     Bachelor's degree in city planning or a related field from an accredited college or university, and three (3) years of professional planning experience. A Master's degree in Planning  may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

(B)      Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Senior Planner

The Senior Planner is primarily responsible for managing, coordinating and conducting review and processing of development applications, including the preparation of agendas for the Architectural and Site Review Committee and the Planning Commission, written and oral reports and recommendations to those advisory bodies as well as the City Council, site design evaluation, interaction with applicants and the public, and coordination of review by other departments and agencies.

The Senior Planner serves as decision maker for certain types of applications, as defined by the Municipal Code. The Senior Planner participates in the more difficult and complex project reviews, performs more difficult research and analysis of various planning activities, and may direct and supervise work performed by the Associate Planner, Assistant Planner, Contract Planners, and Counter/Records Technician.  The Senior Planner reports directly to the Community Development Director and provides supervision to the Associate Planner, Assistant Planner, Contract Planners, and Development Services Technician as assigned.

Planning may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. AICP certification is desirable.
