City Council Vacancy and Appointment Process
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Alexander Pedersen announced his resignation from the Capitola City Council, effective immediately.
On May 22, the City Council voted unanimously to fill the vacancy (in accordance with Government Code 36512) by appointment rather than a special election, avoiding an estimated cost of approximately $50,000 to Capitola taxpayers.
Applications were accepted from May 27 - June 3 at 5:00 PM. Applications were reviewed at the regular City Council meeting on June 12th at 6:00 PM. The meeting was televised through Community Television and is available on Youtube.
Application Period
Capitola residents were invited to apply to serve on the City Council until December 2026. Applications were accepted from May 27 through June 3, 2025, at 5:00 PM.
Appointment Process
On June 12th, the City Council reviewed applications and appointed Susan Westman to a term ending December 2026. She was sworn into office following the decision and began serving as a City Council Member for the remainder of the June 12th meeting.
Responsibilities and Compensation of Council Members
Capitola City Council Members attend two regular Council meetings per month, typically on the second and fourth Thursdays at 6:00 PM. They are also appointed to serve on regional boards, commissions, and subcommittees that typically meet once a month. Council Members receive a monthly stipend of $660 for their service.
