Capitola Art & Cultural Commission

The Capitola Art & Cultural Commission advises the City Council about allocation of public funds for the support and encouragement of existing and new programs in the arts; acquires works of art subject to City Council approval; initiates, sponsors and/or directs special programs that enhance the cultural climate of the City; and implements the Art & Cultural Master Plan.

There are nine members of the commission. Each serves a maximum of three two-year terms. The commission is composed of the following: One (1) City Council Member; One (1) Planning Commissioner; One (1) Artist or Arts Organization Representative Member; One (1) Arts Professional Member and Five (5) “At-Large” Members. Appointments are made by the City Council following recommendation by the current commission members.

The Art & Cultural Commission meetings generally are on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Concert Art & Cultural Commission Events

Events: 

The Art & Cultural Commission has a rich tradition of providing the community with a variety of visual and performing art events. The Wednesday night Twilight Concerts are held throughout the summer months in Esplanade Park, featuring live bands and musical styles from jazz, western, Latin and swing, to blues and good old rock & roll.  Select summer Sundays offer Sunday Art & Music at the Beach events, with quality art vendors selling along side the Capitola Beach. Family-friendly Movies on the Beach arrive Friday evenings in August and September. See each event category below for dates and details.

Sea Lions - Embrace Art and Cultural Programs

The Commission’s annual budget is determined by the City Council. The budget provides a grant-funding program for performing and visual art events in local venues, support and sponsorship of children’s art and the ever popular Twilight Concert series.

With the new Art & Cultural Master Plan, the Commission will be exploring ways to provide additional cultural activities for the youth of the community and opportunities for the display of youth artwork at local festivals and other venues. The art education of Capitola’s youth is a priority of the newly adopted plan.

The Art & Cultural Commission is responsible for overseeing the newly created Public Art Program. Community participation is a vital component to our public art program. The most effective and successful public art programs involve the community from the inception of a project to its installation and unveiling.
