Treasure Cove Community Event

City of Capitola to Celebrate Funding for Treasure Cove Playground at Jade Street Park

The City of Capitola is excited to announce a community event to honor partners and supporters of the City’s upcoming project, Treasure Cove, Capitola’s first Universally Accessible Playground, at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Jade Street Park. This event will mark a milestone in a long-anticipated project that will bring an inclusive, imaginative, and welcoming play space to the Capitola community. Treasure Cove will feature a marine and shoreline theme designed by Verde Design, with specialized equipment including a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, cozy domes, sensory play structures, and climbing zones, ensuring children of all ages and abilities can play together side by side.

The project was made possible through an extraordinary partnership between the City of Capitola and County Park Friends, who led an 18-month capital campaign that raised more than $1 million in private donations. Contributions came from individual community members, service organizations, foundations, and local businesses through a wide variety of creative fundraisers.  Lead community fundraising volunteer Dan Haifley said, “Over 1,500 donors contributed to Treasure Cove. Their generosity has brought us to this moment.”  The City of Capitola provided $475,000 in initial funding for outreach and design; additional funding comes from a $3.2 million Community Development Block Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Together, these resources not only fully funded Treasure Cove Playground but also enabled the City to invest in broader improvements at Jade Street Park, including new restrooms, improved pedestrian access, and enhanced connections to the Jade Street Community Center.

Capitola Mayor Joe Clarke shared: “Treasure Cove represents the very best of Capitola, a community that came together to dream big and make it happen. We are deeply grateful to County Park Friends, our donors, and the countless volunteers who made this playground possible.” Mariah Roberts, County Park Friends Executive Director, stated: “Treasure Cove will be an incredible resource for generations to come, thanks to the City of Capitola and everyone who donated to build our shared future.”

The City anticipates opening Treasure Cove Playground, and the accompanying park improvements, in 2026.
