Storm Updates

Saturday, December 30 1 A.M. - 6 A.M. - High Surf Warning

Please be aware of a high surf event this Saturday, December 30 between 1 A.M. and 6 A.M. Dangerous conditions along the coast and at Capitola Beach and Village; please avoid the area. Bollards are in place to block vehicle access.

The Evacuation Warning issued on 12/29 is lifted as of 12/30 at 11 AM. However, due to the high surf conditions, there are still some vehicle road closures. We hope to reopen later as we monitor ocean conditions and continue to assess/clean up damages.

Friday, December 29 - Capitola Village and Venetian Hotel Evacuation Warning

Due to large breaking waves and high tide, there is a threat to the safety of residents along the coastline in the area of Capitola Village and Esplanade. The Police Department has issued an evacuation warning beginning 12/29 at 10 PM. It is recommended that residents in the CTL-E027-A Zone (Capitola Venetian Hotel area) and the CRZ-E029-B Zone (Capitola Village area) temporarily relocate. Thursday, December 28 - High Surf & Flooding

A large wave swell brought sand/debris onto the Esplanade (Capitola Village). The Capitola Police Department closed this area to vehicular traffic and closed the lower Village area to pedestrian traffic at about 10 AM. Public Works crews have been working on cleaning up sand debris and water blockages, and we expect roads to remain closed until about 5 PM.

Some of the businesses in the Capitola Village sustained damages from surging waves (Pizza My Heart, My Thai, Bay Bar, Sand Bar, and Paradise Grill). Capitola's Building Inspector is in the process of evaluating the damage. We also believe that the Wharf and Hooper's Beach Staircase sustained additional damages - our Public Works Director is working on a damage assessment.
