The Santa Cruz County Elections Department conducts the Capitola General Municipal Election along with the Genereal Presidential Election.

All ballots are counted and results certified by the County Elections Official/County Clerk (not the City). Winners of the Capitola Municipal Election will not be officially announced until the election is certified by the County Clerk on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

The County Elections Department will post election results on their website after 8pm on November 3. To view these results, which will be frequently updated as aditional ballot processing takes place, click here or use the link at the bottom of this page. 

Election Night Procedures and Ballot Counting 

After polls close at 8pm, results of the ballots received and counted will be released at the office and online. Election officials who have worked at the voting locations will bring their voted ballots from the voting locations to the County Government Center. Ballots will continue to be processed and counted until midnight.

  1. First Report – will be released by 8:30pm and will include mailed ballots and in-person ballots that have been returned and processed prior to Election Day.
  2. Second Report – around 11pm will include results from some in-person ballots returned from the voting locations and additional mailed ballots that have been processed and counted.
  3. Final Semi-Official Report – will be released as soon as all voting locations have returned their in-person ballots and they are tallied. Could be 2am or later.
