Green Building Program

Background

Most builders already recognized the economic benefits of building green. On May 22, 2008, the Capitola City Council adopted a Green Building Ordinance, amending Title 17, Zoning, to add Chapter 17.10. The ordinance took effect July 1, 2008. Capitola History

Capitola is built on the location of an Indian village that existed for more than a thousand years. The Native inhabitants were removed to the Mission Santa Cruz when it was established in 1791. Nearly all traces of the Soquel “rancheria” and its culture vanished. In the Mexican Era that followed, the territory became part of the Soquel Rancho granted to Martina Castro and husband Michael Lodge in 1833.

Armed Robbery

On January 25, 2013 at about 9:56pm, two men entered the Coast Gasoline station on 41st Avenue, Capitola. One of the men, a Hispanic Male, pointed a handgun at the attendant and demanded the money from the cash register. The suspect removed an undisclosed amount of money from the till and both men ran out of the business. Capitola Police and Santa Cruz County Sheriff Units arrived on scene. A Sheriff’s K-9 was used to track the suspects into a ravine off Wharf Road. The scene was processed for evidence and no arrest has been made.

Statistics

The City of Capitola is California’s oldest seaside resort, which features a charming village area between two bluffs. The City’s wharf and riverside areas provide a setting that remind one of a village in the south of France or the Mediterrenean coast of Italy. The village area was originally founded as a resort, “Camp Capitola,” in 1869 and was incorporated as a city in 1949.
