Equity Swim Program is a learn to swim program serving youth ages 5- 11 years old from the Soquel Union Elementary School District (SUESD). In partnership with SUESD, Quicksilver Swimming, and the Capitola Lifeguard Service, we provide transportation, homework help, beach education, snack, and swim lessons.
Goals of Equity Swim Program
- Reduce barriers that prevent learning to swim
- Build community around the water and ocean
- Skill development
- Access to recreation opportunities
- Teach water safety and prevent drownings
- Opportunity for Junior Guard enrollment
- Build an ocean safe community regardless of background
Program Details
The program runs from January 25th- May 22nd on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays after school:
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Transportation from Santa Cruz Gardens Main St. And Soquel El to Soquel High School Pool. Activities include homework help, ocean safety education, a snack, and swim lessons from 3:30–4:30 PM.
Sundays: Swim lessons from 8:30–9:30 AM.
Participants will build swimming skills and advance through the program as a group. Only during very specific instances will a participant advance on their own.
We will provide: swimsuits, caps, and goggles
Transportation:
We have 18 spots available for transportation, but there are 30 total participant slots. If you can arrange your own transportation, we can accommodate that as well.
FAQs:
Are classes ever canceled? : Classes are only canceled during Thunder/Lightning, The pool has a closure, and during spring break (April 5th-11th). The pool is heated and classes will not be canceled due to rain or cold.
How do I qualify?: The Soquel Union Elementary School District (SUESD) sets the qualifications for the program using guidance from the California Department of Education. If your child is part of SUESD's unduplicated student count, they are able to qualify for the program if spots are available. If you were not contacted by the city or school district, it is important you confirm eligibility with the school district before enrolling. You can call them at (831) 464-5630.
