New Capitola Branch Library

The City of Capitola has been planning to build a permanent library branch since the temporary structure opened on Wharf Road in 2000. In January 2017, the City Council approved a $13.15 million budget for an 11,700-square-foot facility at the same Wharf Road location. The schematic designs for the new library were approved by City Council in early 2017.  The project designs are expected to be finalized this winter, with construction starting in 2018.

Capitola has invited public input and kept the community updated about plans to build a new library since it convened an ad hoc committee in 2009 to help select the best location for the new library. Today the City has both a library advisory committee and a library design ad hoc committee to help guide the design process.

Funding for the new library will come from a combination of sources.  The City saved $2.6 million in redevelopment funding and set it aside for this project. In June of 2016, voters approved Measure S, which allocated an additional $8 million toward our library.  The remainder of the funding will come from community donations, regional library funding and general city revenue sources.
