Capitola Wharf Background Information

  • Time – Initially Phase 2 of the Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project was set to begin in Fall 2023. Due to storm damages the City is pursuing an earlier start date to begin the storm damage repairs in tandem with the previously planned and budgeted project.
  • Funding – Phase 2 of the Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project is fully funded through Measure F funds and grants awarded to the City by the California State Coastal Conservancy ($1.9M) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ( $3.5M). The City is currently in the process of obtaining funding for the approximately $1M in storm-related repairs through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Program, which are anticipated to be available in May 2023.
  • Design – The City completed design and permitting work to incorporate the storm damage repairs into the Phase 2 of the Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project.
  • Construction – Construction of storm damage repairs and Phase 2 of the Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project is anticipated to begin in Summer 2023. The City will used a Public Bidding process to choose a qualified contractor.
  • Cushman Contracting Corporation has been awarded the contract and work activities including site preparation are anticipated to begin the week of September 18, 2023 and last through Summer 2024
