Project Summary: Renovation of Capitola Community Center

Project Summary: Renovation of Capitola Community Center

The renovation of the Capitola Community Center aims to rejuvenate a vital space that has served the community since the 1980s. This center not only hosts a plethora of recreational programs, meetings, and events but also accommodates crucial city services such as the Recreation Division offices and functions as an evacuation shelter during emergencies.

The primary focus of the project is to address structural deficiencies, enhance energy efficiency, and improve accessibility, aligning with recommendations from the City's previous evaluations. Additionally, the renovation will optimize the layout of flexible meeting spaces, upgrade customer service areas, and enhance restroom facilities to better cater to the diverse needs of residents, including those with disabilities.

Situated within Jade Street Park, a central hub for outdoor activities and gatherings, the renovated center will complement a separate project to create a Universally Accessible community playground and park, reinforcing its significance as a community destination.

Inspired by the coastal locale, the design will feature elements reminiscent of the Capitola Wharf and ocean themes, incorporating textured concrete, fiber cement board, and wooden accents. The exterior will boast updated entryways, siding, roofing, and landscaping, while new patios and pathways will enhance outdoor usability.

The project has received significant support, including funding from State Assembly Bill 102, supported by Assembly Member Dawn Addis, and pending applications for Community Development Block Grants. With construction set to begin this fall and last approximately one year, the renovated Capitola Community Center promises to continue serving as a vital resource for residents of all ages and backgrounds, fostering community engagement and well-being.
